Spring 2015_Adventure Three: What can you do, what do you want to do, and who can help?

As you are learning this semester, much of what we learn and do is built atop a finite amount of experiences, both academic and non-academic. At the beginning of every service learning experience, it could be said that we are simply creating some stuff that will help our communities (our "places") learn some stuff that will hopefully connect to other stuff that they already do and know.  In this way, we are creators, and so are they.  We give to each other, making one another "better".

We rarely do this alone, however.  In fact, we often have lots and lots of creative help all around us, and it could be argued that many of our friends, family, networks, teachers, peers, etc., are simply waiting for us to create something with them too.
The above video is about kids, and the students that you are surrounded by at the university are a bit older, but the lesson is salient.

According to Google, it takes about .46 seconds to find 13,000,000 results for the following search terms: globe's most pressing problems.  Bing found 35,300,000.  That's a lot. The first hit on both engines will lead to HERE.  It's interesting.  Take a look.

Now, think back to your Via Character Survey (if you have not done one just yet, click HERE, and begin to plan what it is that you are going to do to make your place a better one.

Remember, as pointed out in the video, taking creative risks can be frightening!  But you must try, and trying is a major part of Mapping Your Plan.

To help with mapping your plan, take a few minutes to respond to the following prompts. Try to answer each prompt in just a few sentences:
  • What is Servant Leadership?
  • What is Service Learning and Civic Engagement?
  • How does this work impact citizenship?
Responses to these prompts are due at the beginning of Adventure Four.

  1. Servant leadership is leading purely for the sake of bettering the body of people you're leading. It is not at all for your own benefit.

Service learning and civic engagement involves basically volunteering your time to better a part of your community and the people in it. It is expecting no reward at all but just wanting to help better others' lives that have less than you.

As a citizen I think it makes you more integral in a city or area of citizenship. You become more important and more deserving of your citizenship. Citizenship turns into a deserved part of you instead of a birth rite.

  3. Servant leadership is being a leader for a purpose or for someone else. It is being a leader in order to help others, yet at the same time its the one doing the work. It is leading for the purpose of helping others. Service learning is doing service for the purpose of education. Not necessarily academic learning, but learning about the community and the people in it. Civic engagement is doing things in the community and being part of the community. It is a way in which we learn about the community and can give back to it. This work impacts citizenship because it is something that everyone can do to help the rest of the community. If we are able to do this little part it is something that every citizen should do.

  4. Servant Leadership is giving your time to help others even if no one is telling you how or what to do. Service learning is doing something for the greater good of the community or world and learning valuable lessons and experiences from doing so. This works impacts citizenship because it shows people what truly is going on in the world around them and might maybe change people's views of how to go about interacting with others and how to help their community.

  6. Servant leadership is using one's own time and effort in order to better a community and the people living in it. Service learning is similar to this in that it benefits the common good, but in service learning we are also reaping some of the benefits. Our service learning allows our education to grow by gaining new experiences with helping the community. This type of learning impacts citizenship in a positive way because it is our goal to help the community grow and prosper.

  7. Servant Leadership is defined as leading with other people in order to better the community or the world.

Service learning is a way to learn specific skills through the experience of giving back to the community. Civic engagement is defined as citizens getting involved in different organizations in their community in order to improve certain qualities and living conditions in their community.

These qualities greatly impact citizenship because they help us work together efficiently and better our world. We need selfless leaders who are willing to take a stand and inspire others to volunteer service in order to create a finer community, where all citizens want to live.

  8. Servant leadership is defined as giving your time and/or efforts to benefiting those in need. Service learning is similar to servant leadership except that you give your time and efforts to better the community you live in. By engaging in both, you realize how important community is and how you make up the community in which you live. I think it makes you stop and realize what is around you.

  9. Servant Leadership is a way of leading in which there is no self-centered attitudes and the needs of others of put before your own needs. This is the attitude needed for service learning and civic engagement. Service learning is doing service and being educated at the same time, and civic engagement is performing activities with a group of people or a community. This impacts citizenship by bringing everyone together to become better as a whole.

  10. Servant leadership is giving the time to help others along a journey for the greater good of someone else's life without being forced to do so.
Service learning is doing something for your community or for a larger scale of people without being told and doing something that is beneficial to learning and helping others.
Civic engagement is interacting with the society and being a part of the community for the greater good and for yourself.
This impacts citizenship because it is helping the community and society as a whole and it is showing others that help is needed and just by doing something small, you could be helping in the long run. This is a way to show people what needs to be done in the world and how it can help.

  11. Servant leadership is taking the initiative to help a community due to self motivation and purely for nothing in return. Service learning is volunteering your time to help the community while learning an important value that can often not be taught in any other way. Civic engagement has the same concept as service learning, but can be done on a much larger scale and can affect a greater number of people. This impacts citizenship by showing others that getting involved can not only help others but it can help yourself in ways that one cannot find somewhere else.

  13. Servant leadership is the becoming of a leader for someone else and not bothering about helping yourself.

Service Learning and Civic Engagement are your time that you spend voluneering at a community, trying to make it a better place. It is when you don't care about receiving a reward for your service.

Because of this work, you become part of the society and helps brings people together.

  14. Servant leadership involves the leadership of a strong individual who does not control all the power but rather shares his/her influence and puts the needs of others before their own.

Service learning is the use of classroom like lessons in service areas to provide a meaningful background to the lessons being taught. Civic engagement encompasses service learning but can also be defined as the specific actions taken to identify and rectify public concerns.

These terms above all impact citizenship. As a citizen, you have a duty to improve your life, the lives of the people around you, and your general community. By working in communion with others you can enjoy a sense of harmony and cohesion as improvements are made and you become a true citizen.

  15. Servant leadership is taking on the role of a leader so that you can better others. The goal of servant leadership is not to gain power, prestige, or another activity to put on your resume, but to use your skills to strengthen the team.

Service learning is volunteering in your community and learning through the experiences you participated in. It involves using your time and talents to help others. The knowledge and skills learned such as interacting with others from all different backgrounds cannot be taught in a classroom, they can only be learned through the experience of helping others and putting them before yourself.

Civic engagement is recognizing that you are a part of a community and working to make a positive difference in the community, civic life, and developing your individual skills, intelligence, knowledge, values, morals, and motivation to make a positive change.

The more a person is involved in their community the better citizen they are. The better a person can relate to others and the larger their scope of understanding of others’ needs the more informed they can be resulting in more people voting and having a say in the government. This leads to a society that looks after their neighbor and thinks about the needs of their community before their own needs.
